F.A.Q's.

1. When did Dr. Biamonte start to practice?
1982. Dr. Biamonte had a practice distributing Shaklee Nutritional products, oddly enough at the time he met some other distributers who later became parents to some of todays well known movie actresses and TV actors.

2. What was your schooling like?
Schooling in the late 70's and early 80's was much different for Naturopathic Doctors than it is today. There were only 2 colleges that offered classroom training. Curriculum was sent to the student and the student had to research the study material and then meet once a month to be quizzed, tested and graded on the material. Usually at a seminar in a hotel close to the airport. They would fly in the authors of different popular nutritional books who would preside over the event. It was much harder due to no internet research available, no teachers to ask questions and if the student had questions, they were responsible to research and find the answers on their own. Which meant you ended up doing this work in your local library. Dr. Biamonte spent 320 days per year for 6 years at his local Valley Stream library. That was his classroom.

3. What opposition did you encounter from the medical world?
Dieticians strongly wanted to monopolize the nutrition industry. They were constantly trying to discount any form of nutritional practice and were responsible for over a decade of legal and political battles. Myself and many other nutritionists spent almost as much time attending grass roots meetings, trips to Albany to sit in on legislative meetings, etc. to block the “bills” the dieticians where trying to pass that would have prevented nutritionist, chiropractors, health food store workers, etc. from giving nutritional advice.

4. What is the history regarding the battle over the right to practice in NY?
Because Dieticians wanted to control the nutritional industry, they constantly lobbied politicians and tried to pass bills that would prevent any type of doctor or health food store or any other nutritional counselor from being allowed to practice in the state of New York. This went on for many years. It was at least a 17 year battle until we were certified by NYS. Dr. Biamonte spent the total of one years salary over that time in funding this, as did others. There would be NO educational and college opportunities open to young people today had my group in New York not battled the Dieticians.

5. Who were some of the other people involved in the fight on both sides?
Dieticians and MD's were responsible for trying to ban other disciplines like clinical nutrition. I can tell you personally, because I worked with these people in the trenches, that Gary Null, Robert Atkins, Jerry Hickey,  Alfred Weyhreter, John Palumbari, Joseph Lutz, Mark Andres, Joan Fredricks and Bob Santoro were among the few that were heavily responsible for fighting against them. The late Robert Santoro engineer at Gruman on long island and a ND, clinical nutritionist was the man who ultimately organized and led these battles.
The Center for Nutritional Advocacy was born from these battles.  http://www.nutritionadvocacy.org/sites/all/themes/cbns/images/slide-image-1.jpg

 6. What were some of the major battles?
The major battles were political in nature. The Dieticians tried to bribe political figures into passing bills and laws in New York that would not allow any other form of doctor or nutritionist to be recognized or practice in the state of New York. Through the efforts these few men, both physically and financially, they were able to fight for their rights as Natural Medicine Doctors in front of a New York judge.

7. How did it all end up?
Because these few men never gave up, they eventually won the right to practice. They stopped the war on Natural Medicine Physicians and the IAACN and the state department of education established credentialing for the state of New York.

8. Who do health food store shoppers and students studying progressive nutrition have to thank?
The Dieticians had lobbists courting both the department of education and the department of health! So granting certification to practice and thereafter regulating the future practice of nutrition was in their hands. If not for the actions of the group described here, there would probably not be the opportunities for students and the health food stores would be facing fines every time they spoke to a customer.

If it weren't for the actions of these few men, modern nutrition and natural medicine doctors might not be treating with the freedom that they have or may not even exist at all today.
